“Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.” (Proverbs 22:29 ESV)

Hipsters pursue obscurity because mainstream products are crap, but then mistake obscurity for an end unto itself. Good craftsmanship is the goal, and obscurity is just the temporary side-effect. But ultimately, skillful work leads to recognition and appreciation, and there is nothing wrong with that.

When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people. “Unfortunately, that’s too rare a commodity. A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.” – Steve Jobs, Wired, February, 1995”

- swissmiss | Steve Jobs on Creativity (via mikeanderson)

Stephen Kenn : Inheritance Collection

Stephen Kenn : Inheritance Collection

Act

“Successful entrepreneurs realize that in a world where you can’t predict the future, what do you do? Act. If you can’t predict the future, create it. But how?

The gospel is the engine of cultural creativity.

You should read the whole thing, but this is the amazing takeaway line: ”Any envy or jealousy of other people arouses some guilty conscience in us. By delivering us from false (and genuine) guilt, by declaring that we stand in the favorable judgment of God in Christ, the gospel frees us to create without fear. It releases cultural energy because it relieves guilt; it has cultural power because it liberates us from fearing the envy of others.

Video

All work is full time Christian ministry:

In nothing has the church so lost her hold on reality as in her failure to understand and respect vocation.

She has allowed work and religion to become separate departments, and is astonished to find that, as a result, the secular world of work is turned to purely selfish and destructive ends, and that the greater part of the world’s intelligent workers have become irreligious, or at least, uninterested in religion.

All Christian are involved in full-time Christian ministry. There is no such thing as part-time Christians. Never use the term “full-time Christian ministry” to describe only those with a role in the church or a church-related activity.

2. There is no sacred-secular divide. It’s not the activity that makes it secular, it’s the attitude and approach. The term secular shouldn’t only be used to describe work that’s done outside of church.

3. Serving Christ is not all about church-related activities.
