Hipsters, Proverbs, and Obscurity

“Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.” (Proverbs 22:29 ESV)

Hipsters pursue obscurity because mainstream products are crap, but then mistake obscurity for an end unto itself. Good craftsmanship is the goal, and obscurity is just the temporary side-effect. But ultimately, skillful work leads to recognition and appreciation, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I’ve been toying with the idea as of late that good art is art that simultaneously causes you to realize how small you are or humbles you but also fills you with a deep sense of hope or encouragement. This video is one such example then of what I would like to call good art.

1. All Christian are involved in full-time Christian ministry. There is no such thing as part-time Christians. Never use the term “full-time Christian ministry” to describe only those with a role in the church or a church-related activity.

2. There is no sacred-secular divide. It’s not the activity that makes it secular, it’s the attitude and approach.The term secular shouldn’t only be used to describe work that’s done outside of church.

3. Serving Christ is not all about church-related activities.
